Dentistry Kids Actually Look Forward To

A child's early experiences with the dentist shape how they feel about oral health for the rest of their life — which is why our pediatric team, led by Dr. Priya Chandran, focuses on making every visit calm, positive, and age-appropriate. We recommend scheduling your child's first dental visit by their first birthday. These early appointments are short and low-pressure, giving us a chance to check for early signs of decay, guide you on teething and pacifier habits, and let your child get comfortable with the sights and sounds of the office before anything “dental” even happens.

Our Redlands office was designed with kids in mind, from the welcoming reception area to treatment rooms where our hygienists explain every tool in simple, friendly terms before they use it. As your child grows, regular checkups include topical fluoride treatments to strengthen developing enamel and dental sealants that seal out the bacteria and food particles responsible for most childhood cavities in back molars.

We know not every child walks in excited to be there, and that's completely normal. Dr. Chandran developed our practice's “First Visit” program specifically for nervous or first-time patients, using a slow, kid-led pace, distraction techniques, and plenty of praise to help even the most reluctant patients leave with a smile. We never force a procedure a child isn't ready for — instead, we build trust over multiple visits when needed.

Beyond preventive care, we also treat cavities, monitor bite and jaw development, and coordinate with orthodontic care as your child's permanent teeth come in. Our goal is simple: help your child grow up with healthy teeth and zero dental anxiety.

Questions & Answers

Pediatric Dentistry FAQ

When should my child have their first dental visit?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and Dr. Chandran both recommend scheduling your child's first dental visit by their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth erupting — whichever comes first. Early visits let us monitor development, catch potential issues before they become painful, and help your child build comfort with the dental office from the very start.

What if my child is scared of the dentist?

It's extremely common, and our entire pediatric team is trained to work at your child's pace. We use simple, friendly language instead of clinical terms, let kids see and touch tools before we use them, and never rush a visit. Dr. Chandran developed our practice's "First Visit" program specifically to turn nervous first appointments into positive experiences your child will remember fondly.

Are dental sealants necessary?

Sealants aren't strictly required, but we strongly recommend them for most kids. The deep grooves on back molars are notoriously hard to keep clean with a toothbrush alone, which is why the majority of childhood cavities form there. A sealant is a quick, painless coating that fills those grooves and blocks out food and bacteria, cutting cavity risk significantly.

How often should kids get fluoride treatments?

Most children benefit from a professional fluoride treatment at every six-month checkup, though we may recommend more frequent applications if your child is at higher risk for cavities. Fluoride treatments take just a minute or two and help strengthen enamel that's still developing.

What should I do if my child chips a tooth playing?

Call our office right away — chipped or knocked-out teeth in kids need to be evaluated quickly. Rinse the area gently with water, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and if a tooth has been knocked out completely, try to keep it moist (in milk or saliva) and bring it with you. We offer same-day emergency appointments for exactly these situations.
